Northern Trilogy

Unkind Question Such an unkind question I realised you had no class Such an unkind question For all your pomp and circumstance As the string quartet you’d hired Started to flag and perspire Forcing down doughy canapes How old, such an unkind question It's difficult to understand why you need to know I stared in the mirror in your antique floral bathroom And I questioned why you put me on the spot Growing up I was told some things you never ask In one fell-swoop I'm on the back-foot Eyes heavenly cast Such an unkind question How old am I Why on earth do you need to ask Such an unkind question How old am I Why on earth do you need to know Do you resent that I'm youthful And really still quite beautiful Or my high sense of self-esteem Or that I'm doing things you daren't dream of It's obvious material wealth Drew your ex till he quit the scene Leaving you alone and bitter A most comfortable victim And unkind questioner How old, why do you need to know So when you fling off your shoes And dance as you say a peasant might do Around your office bureau blue room A spectacle guests must endure It's obvious irrelevance you prize over truth Why else would you place such emphasis on youth With your unkind question

Habeas Corpus There's only one law here There's only one law here There's only one law here There's only one law here To go out every day And catch the sun’s rays No matter what, come what may Oh habeas corpus Bring me to see The sun riding high in the sky There's only one law here There's only one law here There's only one law here There's only one law here This is no dictate I received from the sun There ’s only one law here And if this town were taken Fell under a strange regime I may not complain And if my mind was shaken Thrown into strange routine I’m sure I would be restored There's only one law here There's only one law here To go out every day And catch the sun’s rays No matter what, come what may Oh habeas corpus Come bring me to see The sun riding high in the sky Habeas Corpus
